Marie Curie Cancer Care received an early visit from Father Christmas, thanks to Ordnance Survey and Sims Lifecycle Services.  The charity was presented with a Christmas gift of £5,000 following a fundraising initiative at Ordnance Survey’s head office in Southampton. Working in partnership with Sims Lifecycle Services, 450 redundant lap tops, which were ready for disposal, were refurbished and made available to staff.  The money raised from the laptop sale was then wrapped up and presented to Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Lorraine Roberts, of Sims Lifecycle Services said: “We are pleased to have partnered with Ordnance Survey in the refurbishing and reuse of their redundant laptops. Reuse lies at the very heart of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive which aims to maximise the lifecycle of electrical and electronics equipment by reducing the need to manufacture new ones. We refurbished over 450 functional laptops, and uploaded them with Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher licences so that those who buy them can be confident that they have a genuine authorised licence and that the machines have a Sims warranty. It is fantastic that we are protecting the environment by maximising the lifecycle of this equipment whilst at the same time raising money for charity.”

Elaine Owen, Corporate Responsibility Manager, from Ordnance Survey said: “It is great that the redundant laptops are being reused and recycled rather than destroyed.”

Wendy Savage, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care said: “We are delighted to receive this donation from Ordnance Survey and are so pleased that they have taken us to their hearts and raised so much money. This money goes a long way towards raising the funds we need to ensure that we continue to provide a free nursing service for terminally ill people who want to be cared for at home.”
