Sims Recycling Solutions held a waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) amnesty day in partnership with Barnet Borough Council which resulted in over two and half tonnes of WEEE being brought in by council employees for recycling.
The event was part of Sims Recycling Solutions’ Eco Day proposition which is designed to enhance clients’ corporate social responsibility credentials whilst at the same time raising staff awareness of WEEE recycling.
The volume of equipment brought in was the largest to be collected from a local authority in a single day since Sims Recycling Solutions began offering the Eco Day proposition to clients two years ago.
Sims Recycling Solutions’ staff provided a display and pre-publicity materials at the council’s offices in the run up to the event to give employees plenty of time to get their old, broken, defunct or redundant electrical and electronic equipment out of their lofts and garages in readiness for the Eco Day. Stillages were placed in the car park at the entrance to the council’s premises so that employees could drop off their WEEE quickly and safely. A total of ten stillages were filled with WEEE including televisions, keyboards, printers, scanners, mobile phones and DVD players, along with three stillages of cathode ray tubes.
The collected items were sent for recycling at Sims Recycling Solutions’ state of the art WEEE recycling plant in Newport, Gwent. Sims Recycling Solutions’ John Fenton, who organised the event, said: “Eco Days are becoming increasingly popular with our clients as they help the client reduce their impact on the environment whilst raising awareness among employees of electronics recycling.”
