IT Asset Recovery at Sims achieves global security standard

ISMS is a management system which certifies best practice in the management of data security and is quickly becoming a pre-requisite to any business working in the field of data security and ICT asset recovery.

Stuart White, Operations Manager at Dumfries, explains:  “Understandably, our clients are placing an ever increasing level of importance on the security of their data and how it is disposed of.  This, in turn, means that they expect providers of asset recovery services to have the very highest security standards in place when it comes to looking after their own data, as well as that of their customers.” 

At the core of the system is an information security risk assessment which considers threats, vulnerabilities and impacts.  A range of measures to ‘treat’ those risks is then put in place to ensure maximum security of all data held.

Stuart continues: “Clients already know that we protect the data held on their ICT equipment to the highest international government standards by either data wiping or granulating the hard drives or both.  Having the ISMS provides our clients with added confidence that we understand all the risks associated with information security and that we have the correct controls in place when it comes to protecting data we may hold about them.  So clients are doubly reassured.”

The company has now formed a new Information Security Forum within the UK Lifecycle Services team, in order to maintain the continuous improvement approach necessary to manage the system.

Earlier this year, Sims Lifecycle Services became one of the first recycling companies in the UK to receive certification to the Asset Disposal and Information Security Alliance standard, which also promotes best practice in IT asset disposal.
