The Mayor of Newport, Councillor Glyn Jarvis and WEEE Recycling Facility Manager, Paul Wake inspect recycled materials at Newport WEEE Recycling Plant
The visit followed a series of events which were supported by Sims Recycling Solutions held in four Newport schools to raise awareness of WEEE recycling in the Newport area. The events were designed to educate pupils and the public that small items of WEEE, such as toasters, DVD players, hairdryers, coffee makers and computer equipment should be taken for recycling rather than thrown away in wheelie bins.
The Mayor’s visit was organised after he attended the Newport schools WEEE recycling events and expressed a wish to find out more about what the WEEE recycling process involves.
Newport Plant Manager, Paul Wake said: “We were delighted to host a visit from the Mayor to our state of the art WEEE recycling plant. Following the recent awareness raising events in Newport Schools, the Mayor was extremely interested to find out how we would recycle the WEEE once it arrived at our plant. Our recycling facility is the largest and most technologically advanced of its kind anywhere in the world, so the Mayor was able to see for himself how we recycle Newport’s WEEE to the very highest environmental, health and safety and legally compliant international standards.”
