Our commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Recycling plays a major part in reducing the global CO2 emissions, energy and water usage associated with extracting and processing virgin raw materials. Parent company Sims Metal Management is one of the world’s top 100 sustainable corporations and measures and reports on a wide range of environmental factors.

Each year parent company Sims Metal Management Limited reports on the following parameters:

  • Carbon emissions
  • Energy Use
  • Water Use
  • Waste Generation
  • Key Health and Safety Indicators

For the sixth year running, Sims Metal Management Limited participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP6) and is pleased to note it was nominated as a “Carbon Performance” leader among the ASX200 and NZ50, but also as “Best in Sector” (Materials).  We also participated in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for our fourth year and entered the CDP’s inaugural Water Disclosure Report.

Output from Sims Recycling Solutions UK recycling operations contributed to Sims Metal Management's handling of over 14.3 million tonnes of ferrous and non ferrous materials during fiscal year 2010/2011. The use of these materials, as opposed to virgin materials, saved more than 14.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.  Considering that the latest data show that the world average CO2 emissions is just under 4.5 tonnes per person, Sims’ activities off-set the emissions of almost 3.3 million people.

Carbon Trust Standard logo

In September 2010 Sims Group UK Limited became the first metals and electronics recycling company in the UK to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard. The award was made after the company took action to manage and improve carbon efficiency at all its UK operations. View the related news story for further details.

The Carbon Trust Standard is the world’s first award that recognises organisations for genuine carbon reduction. It is based on a rigorous and independent assessment which certifies that organisations have measured, managed and reduced their carbon emissions across all their operations and are committed to reducing them year on year.

This is part of a number of initiatives to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment in the UK and is one of the many benefits that our ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification is bringing to the business.
