Recycling plays a major part in reducing the global CO2 emissions, energy and water usage associated with extracting and processing virgin raw materials. Parent company Sims Metal Management is one of the world’s top 100 sustainable corporations and measures and reports on a wide range of environmental factors.

Each year parent company Sims Metal Management Limited reports on the following parameters (European division 2009 year on year reductions in brackets):

  • Carbon emmissions (-4%)
  • Energy Use (-1%)
  • Water Use (-42%)
  • Waste Generation (-11%)
  • Key Health and Safety Indicators

During fiscal year 2009, Sims Metal Management Limited participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP6) for the fourth consecutive year and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the first time.

Output from Sims Recycling Solutions centres contributed to Sims Metal Management's handling of over 13 million tonnes of ferrous and non ferrous materials during fiscal year 2009. The use of these materials, as opposed to virgin materials, saved more than 45 gigajoules of energy, enough to provide power for more than 6.3 million households (or 15 million people).

A focus on energy reduction at our UK electronics recycling and metals recycling centres saved around 740 tonnes of carbon emissions between 2008 and 2009. This is part of a number of initiatives to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment in the UK and is one of the many benefits that our ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification is bringing to the business.
